About the Site
What is it?
My New Leg is a blog, or online diary, about my experience of getting a new prosthesis.
The goal of this web site is to document the delivery of prosthetic limbs in the American health care field as well as to report back from the clinic on the personal experience of using and wearing a prosthesis. If you’ve ever wondered, “where do artificial limbs come from?” or “what does it feel like to wear an artificial limb?”, then you’re in the right place.
Who am I?
I have been a below-knee amputee since losing my left foot in a car vs. motorcycle accident when I was 20 years old. I believe that one of the positive aspects of being an amputee is the rare opportunity to watch parts of my body being rebuilt, participate in the process, and educate others about it.
I have a long running interest in research on medical technology, the relationship between bodies and technology, and users’ experiences of technology. I am very interested in applied research and created this web site as an experimental patient education project on prostheses for amputees, their families, prosthetists, and other health care professionals.
